Overview
Elina Brotherus es la artista más reputada de la influyente Escuela de Fotografía de Helsinki y probablemente la fotógrafa de media carrera más importante de Europa. Su trabajo ha ido alternando enfoques autobiográficos e histórico-artísticos. Las fotografías que trataban de la figura humana y el paisaje, o la relación del artista y la modelo, han ido dando paso últimamente a imágenes sobre experiencias más subjetivas. En sus últimos trabajos, Elina revisa los “event scores“ del Fluxus y otras instrucciones escritas orientadas a la performance de las décadas de 1950 y 1970.
En este proyecto, hemos hecho una selección de obras tanto icónicas como novedosas en el corpus del trabajo de Elina. Muchas de las piezas resultantes giran sobre la identidad y el papel del artista y con la posición de la mujer en un mundo del arte (todavía) dominado por los hombres. El trabajo de Elina se alinea con una demanda más amplia de igualdad, pero también con el coraje y la necesidad de encontrar una voz propia y personal.
En estas imágenes, Elina investiga cómo los artistas ven su papel en el mundo y cómo moldean su propia imagen pública. En particular, las imágenes hacen referencia a “El espejo y la lámpara” (1953), libro seminal de M. H. Abrams, quien argumentaba que hasta finales del siglo XVIII el arte se entendía como un espejo que refleja la realidad, mientras que en la época romántica, la imitación fue reemplazada por un enfoque en la expresión. Este fue el período que dio origen a la idea del artista como genio, como una lámpara que ilumina el mundo o una fuente de la que brotan ideas.
Si bien contienen una gran cantidad de referencias a la historia del arte y la literatura, estas imágenes también están íntimamente vinculadas a las experiencias personales y compartidas del artista. En las obras expuestas, la mujer ocupa el doble papel de creadora y de objeto de la mirada.
Elina Brotherus is the most reputed artist from the influential Helsinki School of Photography, and probably the most important mid-career female photographer in Europe. Her work has been alternating between autobiographical and art-historical approaches. Photographs dealing with the human figure and the landscape, the relation of the artist and the model, gave way to images on subjective experiences lately. In her current work she is revisiting Fluxus event scores and other written instructions for performance-oriented art of the 1950s-70s.
In this project, we made a cross selection of artworks both iconic and newer ones in Elina’s corpus of work. Many of the resultant pieces relate to the identity and role of the artist and to the position of women in a -still- male dominated art world. Elina’s work aligns with a broader demand for equality but also with the courage and necessity to find one’s own personal voice.
In these images Elina investigates how artists see their role in the world and how they shape their own public image. In particular, the images reference “The Mirror and the Lamp” (1953), a seminal book by M. H. Abrams, who argued that until the end of the 18th century, art was understood as a mirror that reflects reality, whereas in the romantic era, imitation was replaced by a focus on expression. This was the period that gave rise to the idea of the artist as a genius who is like a lamp that illuminates the world or a fountain that spouts ideas.
While containing a wealth of references to art history and literature, the images are also intimately linked to the personal and shared experiences of the artist. In the works to be shown, woman occupies the dual role of creator and object of the gaze.
